Ikkat

A fabric originally from India, in which the warp fibres are dyed prior to weaving. When woven they form elaborate patterns without defined outlines and faded.

The word Ikkat comes from the Malay-Indonesian word "mengikat" meaning to tie or bind.

Currently this effect is achieved by weaving or printing and refers more to the pattern than the weaving process.
