Chintz, the plural of chint was originally a strong and bright calico fabric, from India, printed with flowers, fruits, birds and other designs in different colours, typically on a clear plain background.
Its glossy appearance was due to the thin layer of wax that covered it to protect the fabric and drawing.
The term "chintz" is derived from Hindu, the Sanskrit word "chitra" meaning mottled or shiny.
Now we use Chintz, to refer to bright, dyed or printed fabrics, to which a finish is applied to protect the fabric.
These fabrics are used for curtains, upholstery and tablecloths.
